As mentioned in the previous blog post, Croatia “the new old world” in winemaking, Croatia has a winemaking history dating back more than 2500 years. In addition, it has over 130 indigenous (native) grape varieties including the world-renowned Zinfandel, or Tribidrag as it is called in Croatia. However, despite this fact, Croatia is relatively unknown on the global wine scene.

My first proper encounter with Croatian wines was in 2018 when I began visiting the country more frequently. I quickly fell in love with the wine and food scene and with great passion, I decided to introduce my friends and family to my newly explored love. Luckily for me, most people shared the same enthusiasm after trying a red, full-body Plavac Mali or a fresh and fruity white Pošip. This is when it became clear to me:  Most people have no clue Croatia even produces wine, but the vast majority adore it and would love to be able to get a piece of it on a regular basis.

In 2019, I was lucky enough to walk into the award-winning Wine and Cheese Bar Paradox in Split, owned by Zoran Pejović, where I got to try Croatian wines from all the major wine regions in Croatia. The wine tasting left me excited and after my first visit to Hvar the same summer, I realised what we had to do: bring Croatian wine to the heart of wine lovers globally. Luckily Zoran, who has an even greater passion and knowledge about wine shared this desire.
